One-page website or multi-page site? How a small business should choose
The short answer: for a new business, a single service, or getting online quickly, a one-page site is enough, and it is cheaper and faster. If you offer several services, want each one to be found on Google, or need to show work and articles, build a multi-page site. If you are not sure, start with one page, structure it for growth, and add pages later.
What a one-page site is, and who it suits
A one-page site puts everything on a single page that visitors scroll through: who you are, what you offer and how to contact you. Nobody has to click around, and it is easy to read on a phone.
It works well when:
- You have just opened a company or shop and want an address for your business card, Instagram and Google Business Profile
- You offer one or two services that fit on one page
- It is a page for an event, a new product or an app
- Budget is tight and you want to test whether a website brings in enquiries
What a multi-page site is, and who it suits
A multi-page site gives each topic its own page: home, each service, work or case studies, about us, contact. Visitors can go straight to the page they want.
It works well when:
- You offer several services, each with different customers and prices
- You want people searching for a particular service to find you directly
- You need a portfolio, case studies, articles or FAQs
- You need Chinese and English, or enquiry forms for different services
How they differ for Google search
The biggest difference: each page usually has one title and one description. A one-page site has a single title for the whole site, with every service squeezed in. A multi-page site lets each service page have its own title, description and content, matched to the words customers search for.
Our own site, muduopro.com, is an example. Seven weeks after launch, only 2 of its 10 pages were indexed. We then split each service into its own page and added a packages and pricing page and articles, each stating what we do, what it costs and how long it takes, so that every page has a reason to be indexed (the story is in New website not showing on Google?).
More pages are not automatically better, though. Every page needs real content; do not repeat the same text with small changes just to have more pages.
Cost and time compared
Using the prices published on our site as an example:
- One-page site: from HK$1,000, in as little as 2 days. One page (introduction, services, contact), responsive design, basic SEO and Google indexing.
- Multi-page website: from HK$12,000, about 1–2 weeks. Up to 6 pages, enquiry form sent to your email, optional Chinese and English, structured data and sitemap.
- Advanced website: from HK$25,000, about 3–4 weeks. As many pages as needed, edit text and photos yourself, online shop or integration with existing systems.
A multi-page site costs more mainly because there is several times more content to write and organise, and each page needs its own SEO set-up. It is not just extra page layouts.
Start with one page and upgrade later: what to watch for
Many small businesses start with one page and upgrade once business is steady. To make the upgrade smooth, get these right the first time:
- You own the domain and source code: the upgrade does not start from scratch, and you are not locked into a platform.
- Each service already has its own section: later, that section can be expanded into its own page.
- Do not change addresses carelessly: keep the home page address the same after upgrading, so old links and Google indexing are not lost.
- Verify Search Console from day one: by the time you upgrade you will have data on what people searched to find you, which shows which service most deserves its own page first.
Decision checklist
- One or two services → one page
- Three or more services with different customers and prices → multi-page
- Want each service found on Google → multi-page
- Need a portfolio, case studies or articles → multi-page
- Want to launch within a week on a tight budget → start with one page, ready to upgrade
For how websites are usually priced, see How much does a company website cost in Hong Kong?. If you are thinking of building it yourself with AI, see Build your website with an AI tool, or hire someone?.
Where do people usually get stuck?
- Not knowing how to split several services into pages, so the home page ends up crammed
- Page titles and descriptions that all read much the same, so Google cannot tell them apart
- After upgrading from one page to several, old links break and visitors land on error pages
- More pages but not enough content, so each page has only two or three sentences
